Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr is sweating on the fitness of his influential captain John Obi Mikel ahead of the national team’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Seychelles on September 6.

Mikel was not in Tianjin Teda’s traveling party for the Chinese Super League clash against Dalian Yifang this past weekend due to injury.

The Nigeria number ten sustained the injury in his first game after the World Cup break, against Chongqing Dang on July 21 in which he was in action for 90 minutes and played on the right side of a three-man midfield.

Mikel did not train with his Tianjin Teda teammates all through last week because his knees were swollen.

MEANWHILE, Tyronne Ebuehi will not be named in the Super Eagles traveling party for a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Seychelles in September.

Benfica have reported on their official website that the right fullback will undergo surgery in the coming days after suffering a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of the left knee.

Though the Primeira Liga side have not disclosed the defender’s anticipated length of absence, the recovery time for an ACL injury is approximately six months and this effectively rules him out of Nigeria’s first match after the 2018 World Cup.

Ebuehi’s last match for Benfica was against Juventus in an International Champions Cup game on Saturday in which he was introduced in the 67th minute and he was also a second-half substitute against Borussia Dortmund on July 26.
