A 97 minute late penalty by Cristiano Ronaldo last night took Real Madrid to semis of the Uefa Champions league.

Juventus, having lost to Real Madrid a week ago came close to edge out the Spanish club, after scoring three super goals but Ronaldo’s penalty killed the jubilation in Italy.

No thanks to the English referee, whom according Michael Oliver who red carded Buffon Gianluigi for complaint and rough play before Ronaldo slammed a 97th-minute penalty into the top corner.

Oliver’s decision was not as poor as Buffon claimed. Mehdi Benatia’s challenge on Lucas Vazquez had been clumsy, from behind and a desperate attempt to stop the Spaniard finishing from five yards.

But Juve had made the impossible possible, having cancelled out a 3-0 deficit from the first leg, to lead by the same scoreline at the Santiago Bernabeu.

If Juve had beaten Real Madrid, no Spanish club would have remained in the competition. Bayer Munich had beaten resilient Sevilla on 2-1 aggregate while Roma had sent Barca back to Spain a day before.
