The FCT Police Command says it dispersed the anti-government protesters under the auspices of "Our-Mumu-Don-Do" movement at Unity Fountain in Abuja to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

The police in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, Anjuguri Manzah, says some miscreants, hoodlums and other criminal elements had infiltrated the protest.

However the forceful dispersal of protesters from the Unity Fountain, contradicts earlier positions expressed by government that it would respect opinions that were critical of it.

The president's continued absence from the country is generating conflicting signals from government on the right of citizens to protest.

Meanwhile, the senate has reacted to demands of the protesters who are asking the president to resume or resign.

In a statement by its spokesman,  Aliyu Abdullahi, in Abuja,  the upper legislative chamber said President Muhammadu Buhari would soon return “to continue to provide leadership to our people and the rest of Africa.”

It added that the president has not violated any law by not returning from medical vacation after 90 days.

It further urged the protesters to stop heating up the polity, saying that it was creating unnecessary tension in the country.
