Thousands of protesters from the Islamic Movement of Nigeria are staging a peaceful protest in Kaduna demanding the release of their leader Ibrahim Zakzaky.
Zakzaky has been detained for several months after members of the shiite movement clashed violently with the military in Kano last year.
The protesters blocked the flow of traffic on major roads in the state but are being watched closely by armed policemen.
There are also reports of some shop owners shutting down businesses because they fear a confrontation between the police and members of the sect.
Zakzaky was arrested, following a clash between his members and men of the Nigerian Army last year.
The clash led to the death of many members of the Islamic group and soldiers. Meanwhile the report of the commission of enquiry on the clash indicted the Shiite members.
