Senator Ben Bruce has asked Nigerians home and abroad to show maximum restraint following the latest xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals, many of them Nigerians in South Africa.

The Chairman of Silverbird Group who commended never before seen measures put in place by the Nigerian government and private citizens in ensuring the safety or safe return of many Nigerians living in South Africa said it is in the interest of African unity that Nigeria keeps close diplomatic ties with South Africa.

While bemoaning the economic effects of xenophobia on Nigeria and South Africa and the rest of the continent, he advised the South African government to step and nip the ugly phenomenon in the bud through dialogue, legislation, and prosecution of everyone involved in the xenophobic attacks.

On the Nigerian side, he commended the police for the arrests made so far in reprisal attacks on South African owned businesses adding that the arrested perpetrators should be given fair hearing.
