Senators Ahmad  Lawal and Ali Ndume have been nominated for the senate president position as the ninth assembly begins today.

The election is going to be conducted by secret ballot system with all the 109 senators present at the chamber.

Speaking after his nomination, the senator elect representing Yobe North, Ahmed Lawan, says he will provide the necessary environment to Foster good governance. He will ensure nothing stops the parliament from performing its statutory legislative responsibility. He promised to provide to support required For the government to function. He says partisanship will not hinder them from doing their duties as expected. He promised to ensure the provision of security and welfare for the people. He urged everyone to come together to work irrespective of party lines to create a sustainable economy that works for every Nigerian. If elected, Lawan says he will work with everyone, political differences will not hinder them from performing their duties in the interest of the nation.

While addressing his colleagues, Senator elect,  Ali Ndume, who insisted on his right to run for the position of the President of the Senate, says he hopes to work with his colleagues irrespective of party lines.

He said he will push for a time line for the budget to be passed within three months. He promised Work with the executive to address this.

He will work on avoiding unnecessary rancour, tackle controversial areas especially giving legal backing to constituency projects to make it more transparent. He urged them to vote according to their conscience.
