President Muhammadu Buhari has apologised on behalf of the Federal Government and people of Nigeria to the family of the winner of the June 12, 1993 election late Chief MKO Abiola over the annulment of the poll.
He tendered the unreserved apology as he presented the posthumous award of GCFR to the late politician in Abuja on Tuesday.
He said, “I tender an unreserved apology to the family of the late MKO Abiola. Awards not aimed at opening old wounds but right wrongs done in the past.
According to him, Nigerians will no longer tolerate such perversion of justice as represented by the annulment of the elections in 1993.
“Nigerians are invited to accept the awards in good faith,” he said.
One minute silence was observed in honour of those who lost their lives in actualization of the June 12 struggle prior to the presetation of the award to Abiola’s eldest son, Kola Abiola.
