On August 4, 2017, a severe downpour in the Regent area of Freetown caused the natural disaster of a mudslide.

This devastating experience has left over 3,000 people homeless and in need of  assistance and amenities as the risk of getting really sick is present, more than 600 people missing and over 300 dead.

As the chances of finding other survivors decrease daily, various humanitarian organization and volunteers send relief items to those left in the wake of this unfortunate experience .

Nigeria in the face of its own economic and social challenges has made a donation of the  sum of $1m cash and 315 tonnes of relief material which include bags of rice, beans, maize, sorghum, milk, spoons, plates, mattresses, blankets, roofing sheets, soaps, mosquito nets and mats, medical supplies and  antibiotics .

This donation was made on Friday in Freetown by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Geoffrey Onyeama .

He said the President sent him to express his deep sadness over the tragedy that had occurred as Nigeria and Sierra Leone share a very strong bond and have become family.

He said :Myself, the Director-General of NEMA, Mustapha Maihaja; and representative of the Minister of Health, Zainab Sheriff, have come to really express our profound sorrow and condolences for the large loss of lives, damage to properties and suffering of a large number of people in your country.

Your loss is our loss. We grieve with you at this occasion,” he said.
Onyeama said some of the cargo might be delivered by sea, and it is “a token of our solidarity with the Government and people of Sierra Leone.”

‘’You are very much in our heart and we pray for you to overcome this tragedy soon,” .

Koroma, in gratitude said Nigeria had always stood by Sierra Leone as it was there for them during the civil war, the Ebola outbreak and this time it’s here to support them after the mudslide and flood .
