President Mhammadu Buhari has appointed his wife, Aisha and vice president’s wife, Dolapo Osinbajo as members of the presidential advisory committee for elimination of drug abuse.

The president inaugurated the committee on Monday at the Presidential Villa with the former military governor of Lagos state, Gen. Buba Marwa as the chairman.

While inaugurating the committee, the president said that  the two first ladies were appointed so that they could help the involvement of women and mothers in the fight against drug abuse in the country.

Also included in the committee are representatives of governors’ wives forum (north and south), Nigeria custom service, NAFDAC, NDLEA, police and others.

Buhari bemoaned the high rate of drug abuse as he described the menace as a major public health problem in the country.

He called for a collective action to help those enslaved by drugs build a new life. The president stated that the challenges posed by drugs in the country had created an emergency situation that needs to be addressed.
