Renowned singer Rihanna, is being accused of cultural appropriation after appearing in a photo shoot for ‘’Harper’s Bazaar’’ China, in traditional clothing.
Some social media users have called out the 31-year-old who graced the cover of the August 2019 issue as she is seen posing in traditional Chinese clothes, hair, and make-up in the images.
On the side of the magazine editors, claimed the photos conveyed “(a) Western-style icon meeting (an) Eastern aesthetic” after sharing the snaps on Instagram, and in the accompanying caption
Despite this development, the superstar’s worried fans came up with the opinion if it’s acceptable for a non-Chinese person to wear items from the country’s rich history and culture.
As for a particular user, the comment was: “If you wanted to create an Asian look why didn’t you invite Asian artists?” on Harper’s Bazaar‘s Instagram post, while another said, “This is a total smack in the face to the Asian culture.”
Some other persons are of the speculation that, if it were another famous face wearing traditional Chinese clothes, the reaction would be much different.
More comments were made as one of them also said, “I don’t have a problem with Rihanna being dressed like this, we can argue this as cultural appreciation rather than appropriation. Annoyed that if this was Katy Perry or Kim K, they’d be mass called out and cancelled,”
Considering the influence of the singer-turned-designer , fans have since leapt to her defence and pointed out that her Harper’s Bazaar cover was produced by a largely Chinese team, including photographer Chen Man, who shot the Fenty creator’s first cover for the magazine back in 2015.
There has been no comment so far on the backlash.
