Two and a half decades ago, many artists like Baba Fryo, Daddy Showkey, Daddy Fresh, Nico Gravity, Danfo Driver and others, enjoyed the spotlight in the Nigerian music industry.
Their vibes and hit songs counted so much, putting questions like, ”will there be any replacement for these talented dudes” on the minds of music enthusiasts.
Such is the story of the music duo called Black Reverendz, popularly known by one of their hit songs called “Ayangba”, which took the music airwaves by storm from late 90s-early 2000.
A veteran of the music group, Mr Westley, while sharing his view about Nigerian music and, the “old and new artists” said, Tekno is an up-coming artist, compared to Danfo Driver.
Speaking as a guest on the programme “Today on STV’’, Mr. Wesley of Black Reverendz also known as Wasiu Lawal, said this while making his comment on the ”Tekno song theft allegation”.
There was an allegation early this year that Tekno, also known as Slim Daddy, remixed the song “Jogodo” of the duo, made up of Mad melon and Mountain black popularly called, Danfo Driver without their consent.
Talking about the relevance old artists still have in the music industry, and how their songs still count in this dispensation he said, “intellectual property should be respected, so people should not look at Tekno’s fame, riches and popularity.”
He stated further, comparing American Music industry to that of Nigeria, emphasising that, Nigerians do not value their old artists; stressing that the older an artist in America, the richer he or she becomes because the old songs are still make sales in the market.
He revealed that, he is old in the industry and know how to push young artists to lime light, giving example of his youth empowerment initiative, and an establishment of a film school called ‘’yes club’’ where young Nigerians can come and learn everything about movie production.
In his closing words, he said artists in this generation have impressed him, advising them to do their best, taking away the mindset that they will just make money overnight.
