STV Kids: Easy Fruit Salad

fruit salad.jpg

A fruit salad is a tasty way to satisfy your sweet tooth while also having a healthy snack. The ingredients mentioned here are mostly in season year-round at local markets and supermarkets nationwide.

For children under 10-years-old, please have an adult supervise your activities as it involves the use of a knife.

This recipe serves 6 to 8 people.

Ingredients:

1 Whole Pineapple
6 Bananas
6 Apples
1 Medium PawPaw
1/2 to 1 Whole Orange
Grapes (optional)

Directions:
First you need a large plastic, glass or stainless steel bowl. Peel one whole pineapple and cut into chunks, except the core. To do this, after peeling the thick skin off a pineapple, keep it upright and slice into 4 whole large pieces, except the hard core in the middle. Cut each of the four pieces into bite-size chunks, about the size of a piece of sweet candy. Add the chunks to the large serving bowl.

Then peel your bananas and also cut into chunks the same size as those of the pineapple. Add to bowl.

Rinse apples in salt and water and similar to the pineapple, cut into 4 large pieces, removing the core (where the seeds are.) Now, cut these large pieces into smaller pieces, similar to the bananas and pineapple. Add to your bowl

Peel the pawpaw and remove the seeds. To do this first peel the outer skin off the piece of fruit. Next Cut the fruit into two, lengthwise. Take a spoon and scrape off the seeds and the inner fibers connected to the seeds. Cut the pawpaw into chunks a little larger than the other chunks, but still in the same range and also add to your bowl.

The salad is almost complete. Lightly mix the salad using a large serving or wooden spoon, being careful not to mash up the fruit.

If you find grapes for your salad, first rinse the grapes. If they are seedless, remove them from the stem and add directly into salad. If your grapes have seeds, carefully slice each grape into two, without crushing the grape. Use the tip of the knife to scrape out the seeds. Apply halves to salad bowl.

Squeeze 1/2 to 1 whole orange (depending on how juicy you want the salad) over the fruit salad. Make sure you use a strainer to avoid seeds entering your salad.

No need to mix again. Serve right away or chill in refrigerator for about 30 minutes.

Enjoy.
