The senate has mandated its committee on environment to investigate the Ogoni Cleanup Programme and report back to it for further legislative intervention.
This was part of resolutions approved by the senate following a motion on World Environment Day sponsored by Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
Senator Tinubu raised concerns that in spite of the recent launch of Ogoni Clean Up Campaign, it does not appear that work has commenced.
Meanwhile a Coalition of Civil Society groups has called for an action plan to tackle human impacts on the ecosystem.
The group blames pollution, deforestation, desertification and gas flaring in Nigeria on human disconnect from nature.
In another development, stakeholders in the African Information Communication Technology sector are set to converge in Abuja as Nigeria hosts the forth coming Smart City Summit billed for August.
Minister of Communication, Adebayo Shittu, says the two-day international summit is expected to take a critical look at the level of preparedness for a smart city initiative for the country.
He says the summit will offer huge business opportunities for providers of smart city technologies to exhibit and pitch their solutions and products.
